Pride in Resiliency
We Filipinos take pride in everything. From our culture, to the beautiful tourist attractions that our country can offer, and the strong personality of the Filipinos. Our resiliency is one of our biggest pride. And with the ongoing Covid 19 pandemic, we are as resilient as ever, in hopes of lessening the struggles of our fellow countrymen. But why do we keep on taking pride and over-romanticizing resiliency -- instead of holding those who made us suffer like this, accountable?
During the typhoon Ulysses, pictures of Filipinos smiling while walking through the deep floods surfaced on the internet. Another example of how resilient we are, that we can still show a smile even though we are literally walking on floods. During this pandemic, countless examples of Filipinos helping other Filipinos are shown. Aren’t we so resilient? It just doesn’t sit right with me that we, those who are not experiencing what they are experiencing right now, have the luxury to call it resiliency when those who are struggling will call it suffering. Struggles are inevitable. But why are we forced to face struggles that we don’t deserve?
I believe being resilient will always be innate to us Filipinos, we will always have the urge to help each other. That will lead us to the path towards a more true resiliency, something we can actually be proud of. But dismissing the incompetency of those who have the power to decide how we deal with calamities and other events that put us in the “state” of resiliency will never lead us to true resiliency, something we can actually be proud of. It’ll just be like sweeping all the struggles of Filipinos under a rug and calling it resiliency instead of incompetency of the government. Resiliency is the ability to get back up even after difficulties. Filipinos have been doing that since the start, it leads us towards a more resilient Philippines. But why is it that in times like this, resiliency feels over-romanticized?
Very well-said! It made me realized a lot more about the culture of Filipinos and how resilient we are. Also, it made me feel joyful where the part you mentioned that we always smile through everything even though we are not on our best situation. Keep up the good work and good luck!
ReplyDeleteEven though my opinion is opposite to yours, I still learned a lot. This blog is very well-written, well enough to convince me to change my opinion on the topic. This made me realize how truly resilient we Filipinos are. Thanks for opening my eyes!
