a star comforted by nostalgia ヤ!

Hello! Angelene here! I go by “Eiri” at times since I like the name, but most people call me “Angeh.” to be honest, I don’t really know how to describe myself. I asked my friends and they told me I’m witty, and that I have a good mindset. They also said that I have a way with words that makes them feel more gentle. I don’t really get how they find those in me, but I’m still grateful that they see something good in me. If there’s one thing I’m sure about myself, is that I have an addiction for nostalgia, and I really like the stars!  Blame my Zodiac moon sign (which is cancer, by the way) but memories are something that I’ll never let go of, even if I might not like them anymore, or if the people I shared those memories with have already left my life -- even the most mundane memories is something I’ll never let go. There is something about nostalgia that is so comforting, like a hug during rainy days, or a lonely star accompanying you at night. Speaking about stars, I have a ...

Sa manlulupig, ‘Di ka pasisiil

Image
“ Sa manlulupig, ‘di ka pasisiil” is one of the lines from our national anthem, Lupang Hinirang that speaks for the history of the Philippines. Being captured, colonized, exploited, and abused for hundreds of years, by different colonizers, we have fought our way into freedom, with blood being shed, and lives lost. On June 12th, 1898, our flag was waved on Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo’s balcony in Kawit, Cavite. It was the day when the Philippines was proclaimed free from the capture of the Spaniards, after more than 300 years.  Up until this day, we celebrate June 12th as our National Independence Day.  It is our most significant holiday for it symbolizes our freedom from years-long of abuse and exploitation from our colonizers. We celebrate Independence day by waving our national flag and placing them in public places – it is as if we are replicating what Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo did; waving the Filipino flag to commemorate independence. The road that our ancestors walked on i...

AN EXPRESSION OF LOVE

Image
Motherhood is something that should be celebrated, it deserves more than an ode, or a simple thank you. A specific date in the month of May has been considered Mother’s Day. A day to show our appreciation and love for our mothers; and those who we consider as mothers, despite not being biologically related. Our mothers are an important persona in our lives, we wouldn’t be who we are today without them. It is only deserving that on the second Sunday of May , we celebrate the existence of all the mothers in the world. Not everyone has the same way of celebrating Mother’s Day. Some celebrate it by giving or creating gifts for their mothers, and some celebrate it by acts of service. Each part of the world has its own traditions and ways on how they honor their mothers during this day, but we all share the same reason why; it is for appreciating all the sacrifices and love each mother has given their child. Most common gifts for mother’s day are flowers, letters, and cards. Social Med...

WOVEN BY A MIRACLE

Image
Our identity is woven by the cultures and history of our ancestors. As Bigue ñ os, our identity is connected to our ancestors and their artistry. The Binatbatan Festival Of The Arts, a week-long festival, celebrates the artistry of the Bigue ñ o people, mainly the Abel Iloco Craft. It celebrates the culture and religious traditions of Vigan and its residents. The festival itself is like weaving a tapestry that shows the story and rich past of Vigan.       The festival happens from the last week of April to the first week of May. It contains religious and artistic activities and events such as Carabao Painting and Fiesta Procession. These activities reflect the history of Vigan. Although the Covid-19 pandemic has had a significant change in how these events are held, the traditions of the Bigueno people were still strong, despite the challenges that were faced. This year’s Binatbanatan Festival was the second year it was celebrated coinciding with ...

VACCINES: Our Weapon In The Covid-19 Battle.

Image
Battling something we have no ability to see is hard, somewhat, overwhelming at times. it feels like you have no basis — no guide that can help you locate your enemy. It's much harder if the battle is not outside, but inside your body. Here is where the vaccines become our greatest weapon.       Vaccines have been long used for protection against viruses that are around. The covid-19 vaccine, a newly developed weapon in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic has been in use since it was first released. the government and its people have been urging everyone around them to get vaccinated, but why?       First, we must learn what vaccines are, what they are made of, and how they fight the virus. According to the World Health Organization, or WHO, Vaccines contain weakened or inactive parts of a particular organism (antigen) that triggers an immune response within the body. Newer vaccines contain the blueprint for producin...

And Just Like That, 3rd Quarter goes.

Image
I didn’t even realize that the 3rd quarter is almost ending. I have gained a lot of lessons, both academically and life lessons from this quarter. During ICT, we had conducted Community-Based Research. The most important lesson I had learned through this was how important communication is. The pandemic isolated all of us, and because of that, we barely had any group work. During the making of our CBR, i had realized that communication is the key for an organized and conflict-free work. I was also faced with the reality that it is a bit hard to communicate due to the isolation.  One of the problems I have encountered was how hard it was to communicate my thoughts. This quarter, I am grouped for my Research subject and ICT’s Community-Based Research. Sometimes, communicating takes a toll on me I may have a hard time talking and expressing my thoughts. Communication is essential for group work, and it was a struggle for me to keep up. I addressed this challenge by trying my bes...

Empowered Women Empower Others

Image
Women are pillars of our society. They have contributed so much, yet gained little to no recognition. During this pandemic, we have seen strong and empowered women stand up for themselves, and the people around them. We have seen women help each other. They play an important part in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic, and our rise against its damages.  The Maginhawa Community Pantry was started by a 26-year-old woman named Ana Patricia Non, this started the Community Pantry movement, which helped Filipinos who had a lack of income or has lost their jobs get through the day. Filipina Frontliners who work day and night, despite being overworked and underpaid, still stand strong in order to save lives. There are more women who have started something, led a movement, or have done something to lighten the burden of her fellow Filipinos. This pandemic was hard for us, but with the help of empowered women, the burden becomes a bit more bearable. Despite the countless discrimination, ...

THE FALL OF BATAAN

Image
Bataan has seen one of the fiercest fights in the Philippines’ history. It became a warzone during World War II. Brutal and Catastrophe is an understatement for it has seen over 76,00 people shed blood and drop dead at the hands of the Japanese. On the 9th of April, 1942, we have seen Bataan fall, yet this was a gateway for the Philippines to rise, and escape the hands of the colonizers.  Today, We celebrate the 9th of April as our Independence Day. A commemoration of the day thousands of Filipinos have sacrificed their lives for us. The day Bataan fell was the day Filipinos had a chance to rise above the hands of the people who have stolen our land. Although it was bloody, it had made a mark on our History. On “Araw ng Kagitingan” we commemorate the lives of those who fought for us, we commemorate how strong Bataan is, and we celebrate our independence.  Bataan stands tall amidst the bloodshed that has happened within it. It stood up, despite its catastrophic fall. Somehow, I...
